Agir Axwijk

Agir Axwijk is a Surinamese historian and recent graduate of the Vrije Universiteit van Amsterdam, who is recognized for his critical analysis of the Surinamese Interior War (1986-1992). His research focuses on the often overlooked role of Indigenous peoples during the conflict, challenging prevailing narratives about the war and its impact on democracy in Suriname. Through oral histories and archival research, Axwijk aims to provide a more comprehensive understanding of the conflict, highlighting the agency of Indigenous communities and their strategic decisions in response to the violence.
