Agostinho Barbieri Cardoso

Agostinho Barbieri Cardoso was a prominent figure in Portugal's political turmoil during the 1970s, known for his role as the ex-deputy director of the PIDE-DGS, the secret police of the Estado Novo regime. He co-founded the Exército de Libertação de Portugal (ELP) in January 1975, which aimed to combat the growing influence of the Portuguese Communist Party (PCP) amid the country's transition from an authoritarian regime to democracy. His actions were part of a larger conflict that characterized the violent struggles of the Summer of 1975, pushing Portugal to the brink of civil war.
