Ahmed Al-Alwani is a former Iraqi parliamentarian who gained notoriety for his involvement in protests against the government in 2013. He was arrested during a violent confrontation with security forces that resulted in the death of his brother and injuries to others. Al-Alwani was convicted of murder for the death of a soldier during this raid and spent over 12 years in prison before being released on April 20, 2025, after the family of the deceased soldier dropped their charges against him following a financial settlement.
