Ahmed Shah Massud

Ahmed Shah Massud was an Afghan military commander and politician, known for his role as a key leader of the Northern Alliance during the Afghan civil war and his resistance against the Soviet invasion in the 1980s. He became an iconic figure in Afghanistan, often referred to as the 'Lion of Panjshir' due to his formidable guerrilla tactics and leadership. Massud was instrumental in the fight against the Taliban regime and was assassinated on September 9, 2001, just days before the September 11 attacks, marking him as a significant figure in Afghanistan’s modern history and a symbol of resistance against extremism.
