Alan Gilderdale was an English-born New Zealand artist and illustrator, best known for his work on the beloved children's book series The Little Yellow Digger. Born in 1924 in York, he studied at the Slade School of Art before moving to New Zealand in 1967. Gilderdale was dedicated to teaching and expressing his creativity on his own terms, resulting in a rich body of work that remained largely unrecognized during his lifetime. Following his death, an exhibition of his artwork showcased not only his contributions to children's literature but also a broader spectrum of his artistic endeavors.
