Alberto Cardoso de Vilhena was a pioneering figure in Portuguese viticulture, serving as the first director of the Centro de Estudos Vitivinícolas do Dão. He is credited with discovering the Encruzado grape variety in the 1960s, which has since become a flagship of the Dão region due to its exceptional quality and versatility in food pairings.
