Alexander Appolis is a contemporary South African artist and PhD candidate in Creative Work and Research at Wits University. Born and raised in Kensington, Johannesburg, he draws inspiration from the complexities of race and space in South Africa, often incorporating themes of his own racial ambiguity into his vibrant paintings, drawings, and installations. His work is characterized by a rich use of color and complex narratives that challenge viewers to engage with deeper historical and social contexts. Appolis's current exhibition, 'A Neo-Arcadian Tale: BLACK Pan in South Africa’s Pastoral Romance,' showcases his artistic exploration of these themes and is on display at the Wits Art Museum.
