Ali Skhat, an influential figure in Tunisian history, was the mayor of Tunis before stepping back from public life in the 1930s due to health issues. During the dark days of World War II, he became a symbol of courage and humanity by sheltering around 60 Jewish workers fleeing from a labor camp during the German occupation of Tunisia.
