
Ali Zouari
Ali Zouari was a prominent Tunisian historian and researcher, renowned for his significant contributions to the study of socio-economic evolution in his native Sfax. Born in October 1935 in Sfax, he earned his doctorate in history from the University of Provence in 1973. His scholarly work included a notable thesis on the commercial relations between Sfax and the Levant during the 18th and 19th centuries, as well as extensive research on local maritime navigation and migration flows. Zouari was instrumental in preserving the cultural heritage of Sfax, having held various positions, including director of research at the National Heritage Institute and regional inspector for the Southeast. He was a key figure in the restoration of historical monuments and played a vital role in establishing the first regional museum of arts and popular traditions in Tunisia. Additionally, he was a familiar voice on Radio Sfax, where he produced programs about national historical memory. Ali Zouari passed away at the age of 90 on June 21, 2026.
