Alicia Ortiz is a 19-year-old American woman who recently made headlines after filing a lawsuit against the city of Hartford, the local school district, and her former teacher due to the inadequate education she received throughout her schooling. Despite graduating high school in 2024 without being able to read or write properly, she was awarded a diploma with honors. Born in Puerto Rico, Alicia's family moved to Hartford in search of better educational opportunities when she was five. Throughout her school years, she struggled significantly with literacy, receiving little support from teachers and facing bullying. After diagnosing her learning disabilities later in her education, Alicia taught herself alternative learning methods and successfully applied to the University of Connecticut, where she plans to study public administration. Through her lawsuit, she aims to raise awareness about the challenges faced by neurodivergent students and advocate for necessary reforms in the education system.
