Alihan Bukeykhanov

Alihan Bukeykhanov was a prominent Kazakh politician and intellectual, best known as the leader of the 'Alaş' movement, which aimed for the autonomy and cultural revival of the Kazakh people in the early 20th century. He played a crucial role in establishing the first Kazakh autonomous government, 'Alaş-Orda', following the Russian Revolution of 1917. Bukeykhanov's advocacy for education and social reforms earned him respect among his peers, but he became a target during the Soviet purges of the late 1930s, which resulted in the persecution and execution of many Kazakh elites.
