Amalia Fleming was a prominent Greek physician and resistance fighter known for her brave and high-risk participation in the opposition against the military junta in Greece. Born into a distinguished family of doctors in Istanbul, she fled to Athens during World War I and eventually pursued a career in microbiology. During the German occupation of Greece, she actively assisted Allied officers and Jewish Greeks by providing them with false identities and safe houses. Following the war, she worked closely with renowned bacteriologist Sir Alexander Fleming, whom she later married. Fleming was politically active against the junta, facing arrest and imprisonment for her efforts, but continued her advocacy even in exile. She played a significant role in the political landscape of post-dictatorship Greece, serving as a member of parliament and advocating for human rights until her passing in 1986.
