Ana di Pištonja

criminal Serbia

Ana di Pištonja, widely known as baba Anujka, was a notorious figure in early 20th century Serbia, infamous for being one of the first documented serial killers. Born in 1837 in the Banat region, she initially gained notoriety as a healer and herbalist, using her knowledge of chemistry to concoct potions that ultimately turned deadly. Over her four-decade career, it is believed that she may have been responsible for the deaths of between 50 to 150 individuals, whom she poisoned with arsenic disguised as love potions or remedies. Her criminal activities were finally exposed in the late 1920s, leading to her arrest at the age of 90. She was convicted of murder and sentenced to 15 years in prison, with her life ending in either 1937 or 1941, depending on conflicting historical accounts.
