Anastasio Somoza Debayle was a Nicaraguan military officer and politician who served as the president of Nicaragua from 1967 until he was overthrown in 1979. He was the last member of the Somoza family to rule the country and was known for his authoritarian regime, marked by corruption, repression, and human rights abuses. His government faced growing opposition from various sectors, notably after the assassination of journalist Pedro Joaquín Chamorro, which galvanized public dissent and ultimately led to the Sandinista Revolution.
