Annamalai Varadaraja Perumal

Annamalai Varadaraja Perumal is a notable Tamil politician from Sri Lanka who served as the first and only Chief Minister of the merged Northern and Eastern Provinces from December 10, 1988, to March 1, 1990. He rose to prominence during a tumultuous period marked by the Sri Lankan civil conflict, representing the Eelam People's Revolutionary Liberation Front (EPRLF). His leadership was characterized by challenges from the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) and accusations of being an Indian puppet. Following the withdrawal of Indian Peacekeeping Forces, Perumal faced intense political pressure and ultimately fled to India in 1990. He has since remained an influential figure in Tamil politics, advocating for the revival of local governance in Sri Lanka.
