Anton Wilhelm Amo
Anton Wilhelm Amo was a pioneering philosopher and the first known Black academic in Germany, born around 1700 in Ghana. He was captured by Dutch colonizers and gifted to a German prince, who recognized his intellectual potential and provided him with an education. Amo earned a doctorate in philosophy in 1734 and became known for his work on legal philosophy and the rights of Black Africans in Europe. Despite his significant contributions to academic thought, he struggled to find a permanent academic position and later returned to Ghana, where he lived as a hermit until his death. His legacy is now being honored with the renaming of a street in Berlin to Anton-Wilhelm-Amo-Straße.
