He notably participated in the 2000 coup that ousted President Jamil Mahuad and later ran for the presidency in 2002. Despite facing legal challenges, including a conviction related to land trafficking, he was pardoned in 2021. Vargas's health declined in recent years, and he passed away on June 29, 2025, leaving behind a legacy of activism and dedication to his community.
