Arariboia
Arariboia was a chief of the Temiminó tribe and is recognized as the founder of Niterói, Brazil. Born around 1520 on Governador Island, he played a crucial role in the early interactions between indigenous peoples and Portuguese colonizers. He allied with Estácio de Sá in defending the nascent settlement of Rio de Janeiro and was instrumental in the establishment of Niterói, which was granted to him and his people as a reward for their support against rival tribes. His legacy is commemorated by a statue that was recently relocated as part of a revitalization project in Niterói.
