Arend van den Brandhof (1796-1863) was a Dutch Reformed minister who initiated the controversial 'European Colonization' project in Suriname, aiming to alleviate poverty in the Netherlands by encouraging emigration. Despite his ambitious plans, the project faced numerous challenges, leading to its failure and resulting in Van den Brandhof being largely forgotten and vilified in history.
