Barnabás Lenkovics

Barnabás Lenkovics (1950-2023) was a prominent Hungarian jurist and former president of the Constitutional Court of Hungary. Born in Rakamaz, he came from a farming family in a historically impoverished region. Lenkovics was deeply influenced by his family's struggles and dedicated his career to the principles of property rights and civil liberties. He studied law at Eötvös Loránd University, where he later became a respected professor. He served as the Parliamentary Commissioner for Civil Rights and was appointed to the Constitutional Court in 2007, becoming its president in 2014. Lenkovics was known for his unique perspective on constitutional law, advocating for the balance between public and private rights. His passing on May 1, 2023, was marked by tributes from the legal community, who recognized him as a defender of human rights and a significant figure in Hungarian law.
