Bassel Al-Assad

Bassel Al-Assad was the eldest son of Hafez Al-Assad and was initially seen as the heir apparent to the Syrian presidency. Born in 1962, he was known for his charismatic personality and interests in sports and technology. Tragically, Bassel died in a car accident in 1994, which led to his younger brother Bashar being unexpectedly thrust into the political spotlight as the next in line for leadership in Syria.
