Benin Oba

The Benin Oba, or the traditional king of Benin, is a prominent figure in Edo state, Nigeria, recognized for his significant cultural and historical role in the region. He is a custodian of the Benin Kingdom's rich heritage, including the famed Benin Bronzes, which have become symbols of the struggle for restitution from colonial powers. Recently, the Benin Oba has expressed dissatisfaction with the management of the newly established Museum of West African Art (Mowaa), particularly regarding the absence of the Benin Bronzes and what many perceive as a misappropriation of a project that should honor Edo culture.
