Bernard E. Harcourt

Bernard E. Harcourt, born in 1963, is a prominent political and legal scholar who has studied at elite institutions such as Princeton and Harvard. As a lawyer, he has represented numerous inmates facing death or life sentences without parole. Currently, he serves as a professor at Columbia University and the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales in Paris, where he is also the scientific director. His research focuses on punishment practices, critical theory, and political protest, and he is the author of over a dozen books. Recently, Harcourt discussed the political climate in the United States, particularly the Trump administration's dismantling of federal institutions and its implications for marginalized groups, in a podcast with Carolin Emcke.
