Camille Farrah Lenain is a French Algerian photographer known for her poignant exploration of queer Muslim life through her visual art. Her recent photobook, 'Made of Smokeless Fire,' showcases dreamlike portraits that capture the complexities and nuances of LGBTQ+ Muslims in France, intertwining themes of identity, faith, and resilience. Over a six-year period, Lenain worked closely with around 50 participants, many of whom chose to remain anonymous, utilizing rich visual symbols from Islam to convey their stories. Inspired by her late uncle Farid, a gay and HIV-positive man, Lenain aims to provide visibility and empowerment to marginalized communities, emphasizing the importance of agency in how their narratives are portrayed.
