Carlos Alberto Martins, known by his stage name Katchas, is a prominent figure in Cabo Verdean music, having founded the influential group Bulimundo in 1978. Under his leadership, Bulimundo became a vital force in the post-independence cultural landscape of Cabo Verde, utilizing the traditional music genre funaná as a medium for cultural expression and political resistance. The band’s contributions to Cabo Verdean music were recognized at the recent Cabo Verde Music Awards, where they received the Prémio Carreira, celebrating their lasting impact and international projection of funaná music.
