Carlos Runcie Tanaka was a prominent Peruvian artist born in Lima in 1958, known for his delicate ceramic works that blended pre-Hispanic influences with Eastern philosophies. He studied philosophy at the Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú before shifting his focus to art, particularly ceramics, which he honed under the guidance of master potter Tsukimura Masahiko in Japan. Runcie Tanaka's artistic journey also took him to Italy and Brazil, but his roots in Peruvian culture remained a cornerstone of his work. He established his own ceramic workshop in Lima in 1978, nurturing many students and contributing significantly to the artistic community. His works have been showcased in prestigious venues, including the MALI and the Bienal de Arte de Venecia. Runcie Tanaka passed away at the age of 67, leaving behind a rich legacy that bridged materiality and spirituality in art.
