Carmel Askin

Carmel Askin, a former live-in carer from Mayo, found herself unexpectedly homeless in her 60s after her landlord decided to sell the property she rented. Despite her extensive experience in caring, she faced significant challenges in securing new accommodation, largely due to her age and retirement status. After a series of temporary living situations, she declared herself homeless and sought assistance from the Simon Community, which ultimately helped her find stable housing. Now living in a Simon Community house, Askin's journey highlights the increasing vulnerability of older individuals in Ireland's housing crisis.
