Catalina Giraldo

Catalina Giraldo was a 33-year-old psychologist from Bogotá who made headlines for her courageous decision to choose euthanasia after suffering from severe and incurable psychiatric disorders, including major depressive disorder and borderline personality disorder. Despite undergoing extensive treatment over nearly a decade, including numerous medications and hospitalizations, she found no lasting relief from her suffering. Prior to her death on July 9, 2023, she expressed a deep sense of tranquility about her decision, emphasizing her desire for dignity and autonomy in choosing the end of her life. Her story highlighted the urgent need for legal clarity surrounding assisted dying in Colombia, as she faced institutional barriers in her quest for assisted medical suicide, which she believed represented a more personal choice over her fate.
