Cecilia Giménez

Cecilia Giménez was a Spanish amateur painter best known for her botched restoration of the Ecce Homo fresco in the Sanctuary of Mercy Church in Borja, Spain. Her attempt to restore the artwork in 2012 led to widespread criticism and ridicule, as the figure of Christ became unintentionally transformed into a comical image dubbed 'Bundás Jézus' or 'Monkey Christ.' Despite the initial backlash, the incident ultimately drew attention to the small town, turning it into a tourist attraction and leading to a cultural phenomenon that included a musical inspired by her story. Giménez passed away in December 2025, remembered for her unique impact on art and community.
