Charles Leale was an Army surgeon and one of the first doctors to attend to President Abraham Lincoln after he was shot by John Wilkes Booth on April 14, 1865. Leale provided medical assistance in the moments following the assassination, demonstrating remarkable composure and skill in a chaotic situation, although ultimately, Lincoln's injuries proved fatal.
