
Chrysanthos Filippidis
Chrysanthos Filippidis, later known as Metropolitan of Trabzon Chrysanthos, was born in May 1881 in the village of Gratini, near Komotini. He became a significant figure in the Greek Orthodox community during the tumultuous years of World War I and the ensuing genocide of the Armenians and Greeks in the Ottoman Empire. As the Metropolitan of Trabzon, he advocated for the rights of the Greek population and worked tirelessly to protect them from persecution, demonstrating remarkable diplomatic skills and compassion. His leadership during the Russian occupation of Trabzon earned him respect among both Christian and Muslim communities. Chrysanthos was also a prolific writer, with his work 'The Church of Trabzon' being a notable contribution to the history of the region. He passed away in 1949, leaving behind a legacy of dedication to his faith and community.
