Claude-Jules Duruof was a French engineer and aeronaut born in 1841, known for his pioneering work in ballooning. He gained significant recognition for his audacious flight during the siege of Paris in 1870, where he successfully transported mail over enemy lines, demonstrating the potential of aerial communication. Duruof's early ambitions included a notable attempt to participate in the inauguration of the Suez Canal in 1869, which was ultimately thwarted by adverse weather conditions.
