Claudia Edwards-Bethel was a Jamaican mother whose courageous pursuit of justice following her rape by a Bahamian immigration officer became a landmark case highlighting systemic failures in the treatment of migrants. Despite facing immense challenges, including living in fear and battling through the courts for over a decade, she remained determined to advocate for her rights and those of her family. Tragically, she passed away during the COVID-19 pandemic before the UK Privy Council vindicated her constitutional rights, affirming the Bahamian government's liability in her case.
