Clemens XIV
Clemens XIV, born Giovanni Vincenzo Antonio Ganganelli in 1705, served as Pope from 1769 until his death in 1774. He is best known for his efforts to suppress the Jesuits, a powerful religious order, which culminated in the dissolution of the Society of Jesus in 1773. His papacy was marked by attempts to reconcile with various European monarchs and to improve relations with the Jewish community, evidenced by the historical letter from the Jewish community of Rome in 1772, which appealed for intervention against humiliating demands placed upon them.
