Clement III, also known as Antipope Clement III, was a significant figure in the 11th century, known for his opposition to Pope Urban II during the Investiture Controversy. Elected in 1080, he was a puppet of Holy Roman Emperor Henry IV, who sought to control the papacy. His reign was marked by political strife and the struggle for authority between the papacy and the emperor, highlighting the tumultuous relationship between church and state during this period. He was ultimately considered an antipope due to his illegitimate election and was rejected by the mainstream Catholic Church.
