Cobertinho Uitenwerf is a former truck and excavator operator who worked for eleven years at Newmont, a gold mining company. Recently, he was one of seventy employees laid off due to disappointing company results. Uitenwerf expressed his disappointment not only over the job loss but also over the high tax deduction of 35 to 38 percent on the severance pay, which he and other employees deemed unjust. He highlighted the challenges faced by workers, including physical injuries sustained during long shifts, and has voiced his concerns through a petition to the National Assembly, advocating for better severance terms and a reduction in tax deductions.
