Cpl. Fred G. Benning was a World War I soldier awarded the Distinguished Service Cross for his extraordinary bravery during combat in France on October 9, 1918. After his heroic actions, which included leading his platoon through heavy fire, he returned home to Neligh, Nebraska, where he later served as mayor. He is now honored as the namesake for Fort Benning, which has been renamed to commemorate his legacy.
