Crystal LaBeija

Crystal LaBeija was a pioneering figure in the ballroom scene, founding the Royal House of LaBeija in the 1970s in Manhattan. As an Afro-American transgender and drag performer, she laid the groundwork for the modern ballroom culture, creating a space for marginalized voices to be heard and celebrated.
