D Udaya Kumar is an Indian academic and designer best known for creating the Indian rupee symbol (₹), which was officially adopted by the government on July 15, 2010. Born in 1978 in Chennai, Kumar is a post-graduate in Design from the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay and a professor at IIT Guwahati. His design, a blend of the Devanagari 'Ra' and the Roman 'R', incorporates elements representing the national flag and the concept of equality. Recently, he was in the news for distancing himself from a controversy involving the Tamil Nadu government's decision to replace the rupee symbol with a Tamil letter in its budget logo, emphasizing that such choices are the prerogative of the government.
