Daryna Shevchenko

Daryna Shevchenko is the managing director of the Kyiv Independent, a prominent English-language newspaper in Ukraine that has gained recognition for its critical journalism during the ongoing war with Russia. Under her leadership, the newspaper has expanded from 18 to over 80 journalists, playing a vital role in covering the realities of the conflict while balancing the need for critical coverage of both the war and the Ukrainian government. Shevchenko's commitment to journalistic integrity and the pursuit of truth has been pivotal in the fight for freedom of expression in Ukraine, and she was recently honored with the Politikens Frihedspris alongside her colleague Olga Rudenko for their efforts in promoting democracy and human rights.
