David O’Keefe

David O’Keefe was a 19th-century adventurer and entrepreneur who made a significant impact on the economy of Yap. After arriving on the island, he capitalized on local resources, particularly coconuts and sea cucumbers, and controversially introduced larger, factory-made stone disks as currency, which inadvertently led to inflation and disrupted the traditional economic system based on the culturally significant stone rai.
