Known as Mestre Didi, he was a prominent Brazilian sculptor and the high priest of the Egungun cult, celebrated for transforming sacred objects from African matrix religions into artistic sculptures. Born in Salvador in 1917, he dedicated much of his life to the candomblé traditions before gaining recognition as an artist in the 1960s. Mestre Didi passed away in 2013, but his legacy continues to be honored in exhibitions, such as the recent one at El Museo del Barrio in New York.
