Diogenes of Oenoanda was a wealthy citizen of ancient Rome who lived during the 2nd century AD. He is best known for commissioning a large stone inscription in the city of Oenoanda, which contained the teachings of Epicurus. This monumental wall, over eighty meters long, was intended to make Epicurean philosophy accessible to the public, emphasizing the idea that death should not be feared. Diogenes sought to spread the comforting messages of Epicureanism, advocating for a life of tranquility and the pursuit of happiness free from the fear of death.
