Ecaterina Oproiu-Murgescu
Ecaterina Oproiu-Murgescu was a prominent Romanian film critic, journalist, and playwright, best known for her role as the editor-in-chief of the magazine Cinema from 1965 to 1989. Under her leadership, the magazine relaunched and continued the tradition of interwar publications, receiving accolades such as the Golden Lion at the Venice Biennale for 'Best Cinematic Popularization Periodical'. She served as vice-president of the International Federation of Film Critics (FIPRESCI) and was recognized for her contributions to film criticism by the Romanian Filmmakers Association. Oproiu also authored several plays and contributed to Romanian National Television. Her legacy, however, has been marred by revelations of her past as a informant for the Securitate, where she reported on notable cultural figures. She passed away on April 22, 2024, at the age of 94.
