Ed Matthews

Ed Matthews is a York-based photographer who has been documenting the war in Ukraine since the onset of the Russian invasion three years ago. Initially intending to work for the media, he quickly shifted his focus to charitable efforts, collaborating with the British group Fire-Aid to support Ukraine's firefighters. Matthews has played a pivotal role in donating fire engines and equipment to enhance the capabilities of local emergency services. He has also launched a mental health support program called Brave Minds, aimed at providing therapy and crisis support for Ukrainian rescuers. His experiences in Kyiv have been marked by the stark contrast between moments of everyday life and the ongoing threat of conflict, profoundly shaping his perspective and work.
