Eduards Metuzāls was a notable Latvian painter and artist born into a shoemaker's family in Mālpils. He fled the oppressive regime of Tsarist Russia in 1910 and moved to Switzerland, where he encountered significant figures in Latvian literature, such as Rainis and Aspazija. His artistic development was deeply influenced by Rainis, who guided him in understanding the true essence of art. Metuzāls became known for his mastery of pastel techniques and impressionism, producing works that reflected his emotional experiences and evolving artistic sensibilities, especially after returning to Latvia in 1921.
