Edward Henry Harriman

Edward Henry Harriman was an influential American railroad executive and landowner whose vision for the conservation of the Hudson Highlands laid the groundwork for the establishment of Harriman State Park. His strong opposition to the construction of a state prison in the region stemmed from his belief in protecting the natural beauty of the area for public enjoyment. Harriman died in 1909, but his legacy continued through his wife, Mary, who fulfilled his conservation goals.
