Born in Co Galway, Ireland, Flanagan became a national celebrity in the US and was depicted by Spencer Tracy in the Oscar-winning film 'Boys Town.' Despite his significant contributions, Flanagan faced criticism upon returning to Ireland, where he called out the poor conditions of the country's industrial schools, leading to his being largely forgotten in his homeland. He was recently bestowed the title of 'venerable' by Pope Leo, marking his path to sainthood.
