Edward Marcus Despard (1751-1803) was an Irish officer in the British Army who became a figure of revolutionary fervor. Born in Coolrain, he served with distinction, notably as governor of British Honduras, where his efforts to promote equality among settlers led to conflicts with local elites. His radical beliefs deepened following his dismissal and financial ruin. Despard was arrested in 1798 on treason charges and executed in 1803, becoming a symbol of the struggle against colonial injustices.
