Eileen Hynes
Eileen Hynes, born on December 15, 1916, in Cullenwaine, County Offaly, is recognized as Ireland’s oldest person, recently celebrating her 109th birthday. Throughout her remarkable life, she has witnessed significant historical changes, living under five British monarchs, ten Roman Catholic popes, and twenty US presidents. Eileen attributes her longevity to hard work, and a lifestyle free from smoking and drinking. Having grown up during the Irish War of Independence, she has vivid memories of sheltering rebels from the notorious Black and Tans. Married in 1939 to William Hynes, they raised a large family of ten children on their farm, contributing to a legacy of 30 grandchildren and 55 great-grandchildren. Eileen continues to embrace life with positivity and looks forward to celebrating her 110th birthday next year.
